
Adult Sports Official - PT (Parks)

SALARY:
Starting at $25.00 per hour
SUMMARY:
Under general supervision, the Sports Official (Adult) is responsible for officiating and supervising adult sports leagues at various indoor/outdoor facilities throughout Arlington. This position ensures games are conducted fairly, safely, and in accordance with league rules. Sports may include basketball, volleyball, flag football, in-line hockey, and other sports as needed. The role requires strong communication skills, rule enforcement, and the ability to manage disputes on-site.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Officiate adult sports games and enforce league rules and policies
- Monitor game play and settle disputes between participants
- Ensure safety and security of players, spectators, and facilities
- Inspect playing areas and equipment for safety before games
- Provide excellent customer service and respond to participant inquiries
- Cancel or delay games due to unsafe conditions when necessary
- Maintain professionalism and fairness in all interactions
- Arrive on time and in uniform with necessary officiating equipment
- Complete incident reports and submit documentation as required
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:
- Knowledge of office and administrative practices and procedures.
- Knowledge of rules and regulations for adult recreational sports (e.g., basketball, volleyball, flag football, in-line hockey, etc.).
- Knowledge of safety practices and basic first aid procedures.
- Skill in officiating and managing recreational sports games.
- Skill in conflict resolution and maintaining a positive game environment.
- Skill in communicating effectively.
- Skill in time management and multitasking in a fast-paced environment.
- Skill in using PC Software including current Microsoft Office Suite of applications.
- Skill in communicating professionally and tactfully with other city employees and the public by oral and written means.
- Skill with organization and attention to detail.
- Ability to work indoors and outdoors in various weather conditions.
- Ability to interpret and enforce rules fairly and consistently
- Ability to remain calm and professional in high-pressure situations
- Ability to work independently and make quick decisions on the field
- Ability to maintain accurate records and report incidents clearly
- Ability to collaborate with other officials, staff, and the public
- Ability to serve as a positive role model and promote good sportsmanship
- Ability to exercise discretion and independent judgment utilizing knowledge of the organization's policies.
- Ability to work independently under general instructions.
- Ability to perform a variety of physical skills including but not limited to filing, pulling, seeing, sorting, squatting, standing, stooping, twisting body, typing, walking, and writing.
- Ability to operate a variety of office equipment including but not limited to PC, telephone, calculator, scanner, and copier.
- Ability to prioritize deadlines and tasks.
- Ability to learn new systems and procedures quickly.
- Ability to plan, organize, monitor, and collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to accomplish unit objectives.
- Ability to understand mathematical calculations involving fractions, percentages, and decimals.
- Ability to work a flexible schedule.
Qualifying Education and Experience:
- High school diploma or GED.
- At least six (6) months of sport-specific experience (e.g., basketball, volleyball, flag football, in-line hockey, etc.).
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Certification in sport-specific rules.
- At least six (6) months of experience officiating recreational sports.
