
Sports Assistant - PT (Parks)
Job Description
SALARY:
$17.09 - $21.36 per hour
SUMMARY:
Under general supervision, the Sports Assistant supports the daily operations of sports league sites, ensuring a safe, organized, and enjoyable environment for participants and spectators. This role involves assisting with game-day logistics, enforcing league rules, and providing excellent customer service. The ideal candidate will have a working knowledge of recreational sports and demonstrate strong communication and problem-solving skills.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Assist with on-site supervision during league games and practices
- Operate scoreboards and update game scores accurately
- Enforce league rules and city ordinances (ASA, USSSA, youth soccer, basketball)
- Support referees and sports officials during games
- Respond to participant inquiries and resolve minor complaints
- Complete incident reports and submit documentation as required
- Assist with handling disputes and escalating issues appropriately
- Maintain cleanliness and safety of the facility, including trash pickup
- Serve as a point of contact for participants and spectators
- Arrive on time and in uniform with necessary officiating equipment.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:
- Knowledge of office and administrative practices and procedures.
- Knowledge of recreational sports rules and officiating standards
- Knowledge of basic first aid and emergency response procedures
- Knowledge on of recreational sports rules.
- Skill in officiating and managing recreational sports games
- Skill in conflict resolution and maintaining a positive game environment
- Skill in operating scoreboards and maintaining game records
- Skill in communicating effectively with children, parents, and coaches
- Skill in time management and multitasking in a fast-paced environment
- Skill in using PC Software including current Microsoft Office Suite of applications.
- Skill in communicating professionally and tactfully with other city employees and the public by oral and written means.
- Skill with organization and attention to detail.
- Ability to work evenings and weekends.
- Ability to work independently and make quick decisions on the field
- Ability to maintain composure and professionalism in high-pressure situations
- Ability to interpret and enforce rules and policies fairly and consistently
- Ability to work collaboratively with officials, staff, and the public
- Ability to prepare clear and concise reports and documentation
- Ability to work independently under general instructions.
- Ability to perform a variety of physical skills including but not limited to filing, pulling, seeing, sorting, squatting, standing, stooping, twisting body, typing, walking, and writing.
- Ability to operate a variety of office equipment including but not limited to PC, telephone, calculator, scanner, and copier.
- Ability to prioritize deadlines and tasks.
- Ability to learn new systems and procedures quickly.
- Ability to plan, organize, monitor, and collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to accomplish unit objectives.
- Ability to understand mathematical calculations involving fractions, percentages, and decimals.
- Ability to work within a set schedule.
Qualifying Education and Experience:
- High school diploma or GED
- Successful completion of City of Arlington’s CPR and First Aid training (required upon hire)
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Certification in sport-specific rules.
- Experience officiating recreational sports.
