Key Responsibilities

The Optimization Engineering Co-Op performs a variety of assignments related to energy assessments, commissioning, retro-commissioning, and building performance optimization. This position is designed to provide hands-on experience in evaluating and improving building systems while developing both technical and professional skills. The Co-Op supports project teams through data analysis, fieldwork, and documentation while gaining exposure to real-world applications in energy and sustainability. 




Qualifications

Candidates should be currently pursuing a degree in Mechanical, Electrical, or Architectural Engineering, Sustainability, Environmental Engineering, or a related field from an ABET‑accredited (or equivalent) program. The role requires the ability to work full-time (40 hours per week) for the duration of a semester and legal authorization to work in the United States without sponsorship. Ideal candidates demonstrate strong problem-solving and critical thinking skills, along with high attention to detail and a commitment to quality. Effective verbal and written communication skills and the ability to collaborate in a team-oriented environment are essential. Proficiency in Microsoft Office is expected, with exposure to data analysis or visualization tools considered a plus. Familiarity with AutoCAD, Revit, or energy modeling tools is preferred but not required, and candidates should bring a curious mindset with a willingness to learn and seek feedback.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Develops and applies foundational engineering knowledge within the built environment. 
  • Supports energy studies, audits, and building system evaluations (HVAC, lighting, envelope, etc.). 
  • Assists with system installation verification and functional performance testing. 
  • Gathers, organizes, and analyzes data related to building performance and energy usage. 
  • Contributes to the preparation of energy calculations, reports, and technical documentation. 
  • Utilizes software tools for data analysis, visualization, and building performance evaluation. 
  • Participates in field observations and validation of equipment and system performance. 
  • Collaborates with project teams to support deliverables and meet deadlines. 
  • Builds understanding of commissioning, retro-commissioning, and optimization processes. 
  • Ensures accuracy and quality in all assigned work. 
  • Engages in continuous learning and professional development.
