Key Responsibilities

The Plumbing Engineering Co-Op performs a variety of assignments involving the application of foundational plumbing engineering principles for HEAPY projects. This role supports the design and analysis of plumbing systems within the built environment while developing both technical and professional skills. The Co-Op contributes to project teams through design support, documentation, and collaboration under the guidance of experienced colleagues, with exposure to fire suppression systems as applicable. 



Qualifications

Candidates should be currently pursuing a degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Architectural Engineering, or a related AEC field from an ABET‑accredited (or equivalent accredited) program. The role requires the ability to work full-time (40 hours per week) for the duration of a semester and legal authorization to work in the United States without sponsorship. Successful candidates demonstrate strong problem‑solving and critical thinking skills, along with excellent attention to detail and a commitment to high‑quality work. Effective verbal and written communication skills are essential, as is the ability to collaborate in a team environment. Familiarity with the Microsoft Office Suite is expected, and exposure to AutoCAD, Revit, or similar design software is preferred but not required.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Develops and applies foundational plumbing engineering knowledge within the built environment. 
  • Supports project teams with system layouts, basic calculations, and design documentation. 
  • Learns and utilizes design tools such as AutoCAD MEP and/or Revit MEP. 
  • Ensures accuracy in design inputs while building understanding of plumbing and basic fire suppression systems. 
  • Gathers and organizes information for use in design specifications and reports. 
  • Collaborates with colleagues to support project deliverables and meet deadlines. 
  • Participates in field observations to connect design with real-world installations. 
  • Engages in continuous learning through training, mentorship, and hands-on experience. 
  • Builds familiarity with HEAPY standards, processes, and workflows. 
  • Demonstrates professionalism through communication, accountability, and teamwork.
