Minimum Requirements:
NYS Certification in Special Education/Related field with focus in Applied Behavioral Analysis or
NYS License in Clinical Psychology with focus in Applied Behavioral Analysis or
Master's in Psychology/Related field with focus as an Applied Behavioral Analyst or
BCBA (Board Certified Behavior Analyst) and/or LBA (Licensed Behavior Analyst) Certification
Must be willing to obtain BCBA within 5 years
Desired Qualifications:
NYS Certification in Special Education/Related field with focus in Applied Behavioral Analysis or
NYS License in Clinical Psychology with focus in Applied Behavioral Analysis or
Master's in Psychology/Related field with focus as an Applied Behavioral Analyst or
BCBA (Board Certified Behavior Analyst) and/or LBA (Licensed Behavior Analyst) Certification
Must be willing to obtain BCBA within 5 years
Minimum of five (5) years of Special Education experience to include students with Autism Spectrum Disorders preferred.
Experience working in self contained classrooms, specifically autism based classrooms
Experience working with students with autism in general education or integrated classroom settings
Experience in Therapeutic Crisis Intervention for Schools and working directly with students who demonstrate challenging/aggressive behaviors.
Knowledge of progressive teaching approaches to include Applied Behavioral Analysis, TEACCH, and PECS, social stories, and social thinking curriculum
Experience/skills working and collaborating with multiple professionals/disciplines
This position may be called on to substitute in classrooms when the need for a daily substitute arises. In very rare cases this position may be called upon to fulfill a vacancy in the appropriate tenure area until the vacancy can be filled.
Position Summary/Responsibilities:
An Autism Specialist plans, develops, and coordinates service delivery options to meet the needs of students diagnosed with autism spectrum disorders (ASD); consults with and trains instructional staff regarding pro-active programming, behavioral plans and behavioral supports; assists instructional personnel in development of comprehensive program plans; collaborates with related service providers, general education teachers, families, and others as appropriate.
Provide classroom-based consultation to teachers and support staff in designing appropriate classroom environments and instructional plans for students with Autism Spectrum Disorders.
Support teams in the development, review, and implementation of Individualized Educational Plan, Functional Behavior Assessments, Behavior Intervention Plans, and curriculum for students with Autism Spectrum Disorders.
Develop and implement professional development for district staff in autism and general information regarding behavior analysis.
Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with supervisors, parents, school district personnel, community based agencies and other professionals working in the area.
Provide classroom-based consultation to teachers and support staff in designing appropriate classroom environments and instructional plans for students with Autism Spectrum Disorders.
Abilities to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information with discretion; work within a changing and demanding environment.
Ability to function in stressful situations and to exercise good judgment under potentially dangerous conditions.
Direct work with students who present complex and challenging behaviors (case by case basis)
Maintains a written log of consultation hours and other relevant activities.
Stays up to date with current research.
Must be able to communicate ideas clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing.
