Job Description

A Medical Assistant provides dual clinical and administrative support to improve patient flow, acting as the primary point of contact under the supervision of a nurse and/or provider. Key duties include rooming and checking patients in/out, collecting insurance and other demographic information, recording vital signs and medical history, administering injections (when vaccine certified), performing point of care testing, updating patient's record in ECW, faxing, following up with home care orders, referrals, communicating with the team and other healthcare vendors (as required) and other duties as required. 
 
Core Clinical Responsibilities
  • Patient Intake: Greeting patients, escorting them to rooms, and recording medical history.
  • Vitals & Assessment: Measuring blood pressure, heart rate, temperature, weight, and height.
  • Procedures: Assisting providers with physical exams 
  • Lab/Diagnostics: Collecting, performing point of care testing, performing EKG/spirometry, other tests as required and documenting the results.
  • Sanitation: Cleaning, stocking examination rooms, and sterilizing equipment, etc

Administrative Duties

  • Documentation: Entering accurate patient information into the Electronic Health Record (EHR) system.
  • Scheduling/Re-scheduling: Scheduling patient appointments and managing front-office duties when needed.
  • Coordination: Assisting with referrals, pre-authorizations for specialized testing, and managing phone calls, faxes, ordering supplies, maintaining the logs, etc
  • Compliance: Ensuring compliance with HIPAA and clinical regulations (i.e. CLIA)

Community Health Focus

  • Patient Advocacy: Educating patients on care plans, follow-ups, and medication.
  • Team-Based Care: Collaborating with community health workers, nurses, providers and other clinical department as required. 

 

Core Competencies/Skill Sets:

  • Must possess effective communication skills and be proficient in English (preferred).
  • Demonstrated effective verbal and written communication skills along with proper telephone etiquette.
  • Demonstrate the ability to effectively translate medical terminology.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Software and computer skills is required. 
  • Able to efficiently function in fast-paced work environment.
  • Participates in required orientation and training programs, departmental meetings as required.

  • In collaboration with the Clinical Lead Nurse and/or VP of Nursing, assist with ensuring quality and regulatory compliance within the nursing department and organizationally as appropriate.

  • Complies with applicable legal requirements, standards, policies and procedures including but not limited those within the Compliance Process, Code of Conduct and HIPAA and the Joint Commission.

​​​​​​​Licenses/Requirements 

  • Diploma from approved and accredited by CT DPH school Medical Assistant certification required.
  • RMA certification required
  • Current CPR certification is required (Adult and Pediatric). 
  • Professional Experience/Educational Requirements:

    Certification/Licensure:

    • High School graduate or equivalent.
    • Previous experience in CHC and/or related health field is preferred. 
    • Bi-lingual (Spanish) preferred.
