Location: Pittsburgh, PA (Hybrid)
Classification: Exempt
Status: Full-Time
Reports to: Senior Manager, Data Governance
Purpose
The Data Steward operationalizes the enterprise data governance program within assigned data domains, acting as the day-to-day custodian of data quality, ownership accountability, and policy compliance across PANTHERx's data assets. This role executes the stewardship activities that translate governance policy into practice: monitoring data quality, resolving data quality issues, maintaining asset documentation in the data catalogue, and serving as the domain-level escalation point for data ownership disputes and policy exceptions. The Data Steward works under the direction of the Senior Manager, Data Governance and in close coordination with Data Engineering, Analytics Engineering, QA, and Informatics to ensure that data moving through PANTHERx's platform is governed, documented, and trustworthy.
Responsibilities
Data Stewardship & Data Quality
- Serves as the named steward for assigned data domains (clinical, operational, or analytics), maintaining accountability for data quality, documentation, and policy compliance within those domains.
- Monitors data quality metrics for assigned domains: completeness, accuracy, timeliness, consistency, and uniqueness, as defined by the governance framework.
- Identifies, documents, and escalates data quality issues, tracking remediation through resolution in coordination with Data Engineering and Analytics Engineering.
- Participates in data quality reviews on a bi-weekly cadence, reporting domain-level quality status to leadership.
Data Catalogue & Asset Documentation
- Maintains and updates data asset documentation in the enterprise data catalogue (Atlan or equivalent) for assigned domains: ownership, classification, lineage stubs, and quality status.
- Ensures new data assets introduced within assigned domains are catalogued, classified, and assigned ownership before reaching production consumers.
- Reviews and validates metadata standards compliance for data assets within assigned domains, flagging gaps or inconsistencies.
- Supports business glossary maintenance for assigned domains, ensuring plain-language definitions are accurate, current, and consistent with how the business and clinical teams use the data.
Policy Compliance & Issue Resolution
- Monitors compliance with published data policies (classification, retention, access, quality standards) within assigned domains, escalating non-compliance to leadership.
- Serves as the first-line resolution point for data ownership disputes, data definition conflicts, and policy exception requests within assigned domains.
- Documents policy exceptions with rationale, owner sign-off, and time-bound review dates, maintaining an auditable exception log.
- Supports regulatory and audit readiness by maintaining accurate, current documentation of governance posture within assigned domains.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Partners with QA to validate that pipeline validation rules for assigned domains reflect current governance-defined quality dimensions and thresholds.
- Partners with Informatics to ensure data definitions and quality standards for assigned domains are accurately reflected in acceptance criteria before work enters delivery.
- Participates in delivery planning forums and retrospectives for data workstreams within assigned domains, contributing governance perspective on requirements and pipeline decisions.
- Supports Data Engineering and Analytics Engineering in understanding governance requirements as they design new pipelines and data products within assigned domains.
Required Qualifications
- 3+ years of experience in data management, data quality, data analysis, or a closely related field with direct exposure to data governance, stewardship, or data quality operations.
- Demonstrated ability to apply data quality concepts in practice: identifying quality issues, documenting root causes, and tracking remediation through resolution.
- Experience working with data catalogue or data documentation tools; ability to maintain structured asset documentation to organizational standards.
- Strong analytical and organizational skills; able to manage domain stewardship responsibilities across multiple data assets and workstreams simultaneously.
- Effective cross-functional collaborator; able to work alongside engineering, QA, and clinical or operational teams to resolve data issues and enforce policy.
- Clear, precise written communication skills; able to document governance findings, policy exceptions, and quality issues for both technical and non-technical audiences.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in healthcare, specialty pharmacy, or regulated industries; familiarity with HIPAA, NCPDP, HL7, or clinical data standards.
- Familiarity with DAMA-DMBOK data governance concepts and how they translate into operational stewardship practice.
- Hands-on experience with enterprise data catalogue tooling (Atlan, Collibra, Alation, DataHub, or equivalent).
- Exposure to modern cloud data platforms (Azure Databricks, Snowflake, or equivalent) and how data assets are structured in medallion or layered architectures.
- Familiarity with data quality frameworks or tooling (Great Expectations, Soda, Monte Carlo, or equivalent).
- CDMP (Certified Data Management Professional) certification or equivalent, or active pursuit of certification.
- Bachelor's degree in Information Systems, Computer Science, Data Management, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
