Location: Pittsburgh, PA (Hybrid)

Classification: Exempt

Status: Full-Time

Reports to: Senior Manager, Product

Purpose

The Senior Product Owner, IT drives requirements definition, acceptance criteria quality, and backlog management for assigned IT delivery workstreams within the Product track of the Informatics function. This role is the primary requirements interface between business stakeholders and IT delivery teams on active workstreams, ensuring that work enters delivery with structured, testable acceptance criteria and measurable exit conditions. The Senior Product Owner works in close partnership with Business Analysts and Clinical Informatics Analysts to ensure requirements are well-formed before reaching engineering, and with Quality Assurance Analysts to ensure acceptance criteria are directly executable as test cases.

Responsibilities

Requirements & Acceptance Criteria

  • Owns requirements definition and acceptance criteria authoring for assigned IT delivery workstreams, ensuring work does not enter delivery without testable exit conditions.
  • Writes well-formed user stories following Informatics track standards: clear business value, structured acceptance criteria, and defined conditions of satisfaction.
  • Maintains the joint Acceptance-Criteria-to-Test-Case handoff standard, ensuring acceptance criteria are written at a level of precision that QA can execute against directly without interpretation.

Backlog Management & Intake

  • Manages and maintains the product backlog for assigned workstreams: prioritization, refinement, sizing, and sprint readiness in collaboration with delivery teams.
  • Participates in the IT demand intake process, triaging new work requests and translating approved requests into delivery-ready artifacts.
  • Maintains portfolio visibility for assigned workstreams, reporting status, capacity, and blockers to leadership.
  • Facilitates backlog refinement and sprint planning ceremonies, ensuring the delivery team has clear, well-understood scope before sprint commitments.

Stakeholder Partnership

  • Serves as the primary day-to-day requirements contact for assigned business stakeholders, translating operational needs into technology delivery scope.
  • Manages scope expectations actively: communicates trade-offs, surfaces prioritization conflicts, and escalates when business demand exceeds delivery capacity.
  • Participates in delivery ceremonies across Software Development, Data Engineering, and IT Infrastructure workstreams as the requirements representative for assigned work.

Mentorship & Practice Development

  • Contributes to the development of Product track standards: story templates, acceptance criteria benchmarks, and definition of done frameworks.
  • Mentors Product Owners on story writing quality, stakeholder management, and acceptance criteria precision.

Required Qualifications

  • 5+ years of progressive experience in product ownership, product management, or a closely related business-IT bridge function.
  • Demonstrated experience writing and managing user stories and acceptance criteria for software delivery or data product workstreams in an agile delivery environment.
  • Proven ability to partner with QA teams to ensure acceptance criteria are precise, testable, and directly executable at intake.
  • Strong stakeholder communication skills; able to translate operational needs into technology scope and manage expectations across both business and technical audiences.
  • Experience with backlog management, sprint planning, and agile delivery ceremonies in a multi-team delivery context.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Healthcare, specialty pharmacy, or regulated industry experience, with exposure to clinical or operational data environments.
  • Familiarity with ASTQB/ISTQB concepts sufficient to write acceptance criteria that are directly executable as QA test cases.
  • Exposure to portfolio and demand management frameworks (SAFe, OKR-aligned intake, Lean Portfolio Management).
  • Experience with product and project management tooling (Azure DevOps, Jira, Smartsheet, or equivalent).
  • Certified Scrum Product Owner (CSPO) or equivalent product certification.
  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Information Systems, Computer Science, or a related field, or equivalent experience.

Work Environment

This position works in a home office and professional office environment. When in-office this role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines, and communications via MS Teams.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, see, talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand; walk; use hands and fingers to handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms. Reasonable accommodation may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of the job.
