About Lihir
Our Lihir Operation, located on the beautiful island of Niolam, approximately 800km north of Papua New Guinea's capital, Port Moresby, is one of the world’s largest gold mines. Set within a geothermically active, extinct volcanic crater, Lihir operates an open-pit mine producing refractory ore, which undergoes pressure oxidation and conventional leaching to recover gold. Our workforce includes both residential and commute rosters, creating a diverse and dynamic team. Lihir offers a range of recreational facilities, including a gym, sports club, restaurant, bar, swimming pool, tennis and squash courts, and a 9-hole golf course. Purpose
To safely operate, maintain, and support high voltage electrical systems and associated infrastructure to ensure reliable power supply and compliance with site, statutory, and corporate electrical safety standards.
Essential Duties
- Perform operation, maintenance, and fault finding on HV electrical systems, including switchgear, transformers, protection systems, and distribution networks.
- Execute HV switching, isolations, and permit-to-work activities in accordance with approved procedures.
- Conduct inspections, testing, and preventative maintenance on HV assets.
- Support fault response, breakdown repairs, and restoration of power supply.
- Maintain accurate maintenance records and reports in the site CMMS.
- Ensure compliance with electrical safety rules, isolation standards, and statutory requirements.
- Work collaboratively with engineers, supervisors, and contractors to deliver maintenance activities.
- Participate in incident investigations and continuous improvement initiatives.
Training & Experience
- Trade qualification in Electrical Engineering or equivalent.
- Demonstrated experience working on High Voltage electrical systems in an industrial or mining environment.
- Competency in HV switching, isolations, and permit systems.
- Strong understanding of electrical safety, risk management, and safe work practices.
- Ability to work effectively in a remote, operational environment.
- Mining or heavy industrial site experience.
- Experience with generators, power distribution, and protection systems.
- Exposure to condition monitoring and reliability maintenance.
- Familiarity with CMMS/SAP systems.
- Electrical Trade Certificate (Electrical Fitter / Electrician).
- High Voltage Switching Authorization (or ability to obtain).
- Current electrical license where applicable.
- Valid driver’s license.
