About Lihir
Our Lihir Operation, located on the beautiful island of Niolam, approximately 800km north of Papua New Guinea's capital, Port Moresby, is one of the world’s largest gold mines. Set within a geothermically active, extinct volcanic crater, Lihir operates an open-pit mine producing refractory ore, which undergoes pressure oxidation and conventional leaching to recover gold. Our workforce includes both residential and commute rosters, creating a diverse and dynamic team. Lihir offers a range of recreational facilities, including a gym, sports club, restaurant, bar, swimming pool, tennis and squash courts, and a 9-hole golf course. Purpose
The Linesman is responsible for the safe construction, operation, maintenance, and repair of overhead and underground electrical distribution networks (HV/LV) across Lihir operations and associated communities, ensuring reliable power supply and compliance with site electrical safety standards and statutory requirements.
Essential Duties
Distribution Network Operations & Maintenance
- Perform installation, maintenance, and repair of overhead distribution systems (poles, cross-arms, insulators, conductors)
- Maintain and repair underground cable systems, joints, and terminations
- Assist with operation and maintenance of transformers and distribution equipment
- Conduct routine inspections and condition monitoring of network assets
Fault Response & Power Restoration
- Respond to faults and outages on HV/LV distribution networks
- Identify defects (line breaks, insulator failure, cable faults) and perform repairs
- Support timely restoration of power to plant, site infrastructure, and community supply areas
Construction & Network Expansion
- Erect poles and structures, string conductors, and install fittings
- Support new connections, upgrades, and modifications to the distribution network and Ensure all work complies with approved drawings, standards, and procedures
Safety, Isolation & Compliance, Equipment & Work Practices
- Apply Lihir Electrical Safety Management Plan requirements in all tasks
- Execute isolations, earthing, and permit-to-work activities under authorised supervision
- Comply with PNG Electrical Licensing requirements and AS/NZS standards
- Stop work during unsafe conditions (e.g. lightning proximity restrictions for line work)
- Safely operate EWP, cranes, winches, and line construction tools
- Ensure all tools and equipment are inspected and fit for purpose
- Complete work orders, inspection records, and defect reports
- Update asset condition and maintenance records in CMMS/SAP systems
- Contribute to incident investigations and continuous improvement initiatives
Training & Experience
- Electrical Trade Certificate or recognized Linesman qualification.
- PNG Electrical Worker License (or eligibility to obtain).
- Experience in overhead and/or underground electrical distribution systems.
- Fault finding and repair of HV/LV networks.
- Experience working in mining or heavy industrial environments (desirable).
- Strong understanding of electrical safety and risk management.
- Ability to read and interpret electrical drawings (SLDs, layouts).
- Competency in working at heights and rigging.
- Teamwork and communication in a remote operational environment.
Working Conditions
- Outdoor work in tropical and remote conditions (Lihir environment).
- On-call and shift work for outage response.
- Physically demanding (climbing poles, lifting, working at heights).
