Job Description

Technical Lead – Payment Switch

Worldline NZ is building the next generation of our national payment switch — a modern, high‑performance platform that will power digital wallets, new payment flows, and the future of real‑time transactions across New Zealand. This is a complex, high‑stakes, multi‑year engineering programme, and we’re looking for a hands‑on Technical Lead who can make it happen.

This is a rare opportunity to work at the heart of a major payment switch transformation, shaping a critical piece of infrastructure that millions depend on every day.

What you’ll lead

  • Hands‑on configuration, testing, and commissioning of the new payment switch
  • Day‑to‑day technical delivery with DevOps squads, the switch vendor, and architecture teams
  • Implementation, in conjunction with the Core and Infra teams, the core infrastructure: networks, firewalls, HSM connectivity, hybrid cloud, and environments
  • Design and ownership of CI/CD pipelines, deployment automation, and release gating in a PCI‑regulated environment
  • End‑to‑end test strategy: integration, performance, certification, automated testing, and bank/scheme UAT
  • PCI‑DSS technical controls, observability tooling, monitoring, incident response, and production readiness
  • Building and growing a small high‑performing engineering team over time

What you bring

  • Strong hands‑on background in infrastructure engineering, DevOps, or platform engineering
  • Deep technical execution ability — command line, code, IaC, troubleshooting, and system configuration
  • Experience in agile delivery, CI/CD, test automation, and cross‑functional engineering collaboration
  • Comfort working with external vendors and driving technical decisions under delivery pressure
  • Knowledge of networking, cloud infrastructure (AWS/Azure), security controls, and regulated environments
  • Experience in payment systems or financial services is an advantage — curiosity and fast learning are essential
  • Leadership ability: coaching engineers, raising technical quality, and setting engineering standards

Why join us?

This is a role for someone who loves making real technical progress every single day. You’ll work alongside the Payment Architect and Infrastructure Architect as part of the programme’s core technical leadership, steering capable engineering squads while staying hands‑on with the work that matters.

You won’t be maintaining an old platform — you’ll be building something new, solving novel problems, shaping engineering practices, and helping deliver a platform that will define the future of payments in New Zealand.
