Under the general supervision of the HOPE Program PI, provides instruction in STEM to students in grades K-7 in groups of varying sizes. There will be three classes (lower elementary [ages 5-6], upper elementary [ages 7-9], and lower middle [ages 10-13]). Our class sizes are under 12 students per class.

Lead STEAM Academy teachers will conduct classes individually or as part of an instructional team, sometimes in concentrated formats, possibly in sequences with atypical time-lapses, or in other patterns dictated by the curricula design and/or needs of the sponsor. Classes will take place at Hostos Community College. Following curricula guidelines, develops instructional plans and prepares instructional materials; uses and incorporates prescribed materials as requested; prepares and follows a schedule, and communicates with parents. Utilizes traditional as well as state-of-the-art delivery methods. Assists in developing and administering assessment tools and works with the HOPE Assessment Coordinator. Other duties as assigned.

ABOUT OUR PROGRAM:

The Hostos Oasis for Parents’ Education (HOPE) Program is a Two-Generation (2Gen) summer program for student parents and their children. This is part of a research project funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) from 2022 to 2026. Each summer, we will welcome approximately 24 student parents and their children (20-30) to our campus, Hostos Community College, in the South Bronx. The 2026 HOPE STEAM Program will be June 29-July 29, with our final celebration on July 30. Parents will begin taking classes on June 1; kids will join when DOE schools finish. The program runs Monday-Thursday from 8 AM-4 PM (kids 8:30-3:30). This is the period of hire for our teachers, with additional days of paid teacher preparation and training. 

Our research model and programming are based on a holistic model of support for student parents including Family (high-quality childcare for their children and nutritious meals during HOPE), Education (experiential learning college courses, advising, tutoring), and Professionalism (mentoring, colloquia, and professional development workshops).

CORE COMPETENCIES:

  • Ability to plan and organize instruction;

  • Ability to develop and utilize supporting instructional materials;

  • Ability to respond effectively to feedback and adjust teaching strategies and materials in order to motivate students and to respond to student needs;

  • Ability to deliver instruction effectively, both orally and in writing;

  • Ability to listen and respond effectively to sponsor concerns and interests;

  • Ability to work and teach independently as well as part of a team;

  • Ability to manage the classroom environment, including in off-site locations; and

  • Appreciation and support of the diversity and varying learning styles;
     

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • A degree in elementary education or early childhood education (2-year degrees will be considered) AND 

  • A minimum of two years of experience working with elementary children in a summer program and/or educational setting OR a minimum of two years working with K-12 kids

Pay Range:

$45-$70/hour
