Lead Underwriter
Job Description
For over 165 years, CGU has been insuring ambition. Part of Insurance Australia Group (known as IAG), we’re a leading commercial, rural and personal lines insurer and a top-three provider of workers compensation insurance.
Apply your technical underwriting expertise to complex decisions that shape real portfolio and broker outcomes.
As a Lead Underwriter in our intermediated Personal Lines portfolio, you’ll play a key role in managing complex underwriting decisions, broker escalations and portfolio risk — while supporting and mentoring a highly experienced underwriting team. You’ll lead through your expertise, influencing decisions that sit beyond standard underwriting and helping maintain consistency and quality across the portfolio.
You’ll join a fast‑paced, high‑volume environment where commercial judgement, clarity and confidence are essential. This is a role for an experienced underwriter who is comfortable navigating complexity, balancing risk with opportunity, and communicating decisions with impact.
This is a permanent full-time role based in Naarm (Melbourne) or Tarndanya (Adelaide).
What You'll Do
Underwrite and review complex risks, including escalations, adverse claims histories and non‑standard exposures, within risk appetite and delegated authority.
Act as a senior technical referral point, providing clear, well‑reasoned underwriting decisions to brokers and internal stakeholders.
Manage broker escalations and negotiations, balancing portfolio performance with long‑term broker relationships.
Support and mentor underwriters through technical guidance, case discussions and constructive feedback.
Maintain strong governance by applying underwriting standards, guidelines and compliance requirements consistently.
Contribute to portfolio performance by identifying risk trends and supporting continuous improvement in underwriting quality.
What You'll Bring
Significant experience in complex underwriting, ideally within Personal Lines underwriting or a similar intermediated environment.
Demonstrated experience operating at a senior or lead underwriter level, with confidence making complex decisions.
Strong understanding of underwriting appetite, authority, escalation management and applied risk judgement.
Confident communicator, able to clearly explain underwriting decisions to brokers and internal stakeholders.
Experience supporting or mentoring others through technical expertise and guidance.
Ability to perform in a high‑volume, fast‑paced environment, managing competing priorities effectively.
What We Offer
Boosted superannuation with 13% as standard.
20 days annual leave + 5 days MyLeave (extra leave for what’s important to you).
Work from home and many more flexibility options with myFlex.
Up to 50% off personal insurance, including home and motor insurance.
Partner discounts on private health insurance, tech & appliances, and many more.
Industry-leading 20 weeks paid parental leave.
