The University of Sydney has spent over 170 years empowering brilliant minds from all walks of life to strive for better – for themselves, their communities and their world. Internal Audit helps protect and strengthen that mission.  If you're looking for variety, influence and purpose in a fast-paced environment, this is it.

Internal Audit at the University of Sydney sits at the heart of governance — providing independent assurance, insurance management and investigations across one of Australia's most complex and dynamic institutions. We work directly with senior leadership and the Senate Audit, Risk and Compliance Committee, our work is seen and our findings matter.

You will deliver high-quality reports that provide clear insights and drive meaningful improvements.

The Senior Internal Auditor will report to the Senior Manager Internal Audit and work closely with the Chief Internal Audit Officer, colleagues across the team, and a broad range of stakeholders across the University.

Your key responsibilities will be to:

  • plan and deliver high-quality audits and reviews across the University’s operational, financial and administrative areas, ensuring alignment with the Internal Audit Plan, departmental methodology and Global Internal Audit Standards
  • prepare high quality and meaningful audit reports that drive improvements and provide meaningful insights
  • lead engaging opening and closing discussions with University stakeholders, clearly communicating audit objectives, insights and recommendations
  • analyse systems, processes and data to evaluate control effectiveness and uncover opportunities for improvement
  • develop pragmatic, risk-based recommendations that strengthen controls, enhance governance and support better decision-making
  • identify inefficiencies across systems and processes and recommend practical solutions that drive continuous improvement.

About you

  • tertiary qualification essential (preferably Accounting / Data Analytics/ Commerce), CA/ CPA / CIA or equivalent desirable
  • hold a valid National Police Check
  • minimum of five years experience in internal audit
  • experience working within large, complex environments, such as higher education or the public sector
  • track record of contributing to the continuous improvement of internal audit frameworks, methodologies and practices
  • strong ability to gather insights from a range of stakeholders to shape audit direction and approach
  • excellent organisational and time management skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities and deliver high-quality work
  • strong data analysis capability, with experience using tools such as Excel, Access, AI or similar.
