FACILITY MAINTENANCE TECHNICIAN I
The Facility Maintenance Technician I plays an important role in supporting the maintenance, repair, and overall care of the Schermerhorn Symphony Center — one of Nashville’s premier performance venues. This position helps keep the building safe, functional, welcoming, and performance-ready for artists, guests, staff, and visitors.
I. Summary

Job Summary:
The Facility Maintenance Technician I assists with the daily maintenance and care of Schermerhorn Symphony Center, including public areas, performance spaces, administrative offices, backstage areas, and support spaces. This role is ideal for a hands-on, dependable maintenance professional who enjoys variety, takes pride in quality work, and wants to contribute to the behind-the-scenes operations of a nationally recognized performing arts venue.
II. Primary Duties and Responsibilities
- Repair fixtures in public spaces, performance spaces, offices, backstage hallways, storage areas, and dressing rooms.
- Patch, paint, and restore surfaces that are worn or damaged.
- Replace facility lamps and ballasts.
- Perform minor electrical and plumbing repairs.
- Maintain seating in the concert hall to help ensure full seating capacity and a high-quality guest experience.
- Install and/or remove banners and marketing materials, as directed.
- Perform daily and routine maintenance of building systems.
- Assist the Chief Engineer with maintenance projects and special assignments.
- Support Concert Operations teams by helping fulfill facility and production-related needs.
- Be available for occasional nights, weekends, and emergency response needs.
- Maintain a clean, safe, and organized working environment in all mechanical and facility spaces.
The duties listed above are not all-inclusive. The person in this position is expected to perform other work-related duties as assigned, even though they may not be considered primary duties.
III. Supervisory Responsibilities
Direct contractors for specific repairs and projects, as needed.
IV. Work Requirements and Qualifications
1. Education
High school diploma or general education degree, GED, required. Two to three years of related experience and/or training preferred; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
2. Experience
Two to three years of related facilities, maintenance, building systems, or trades experience preferred; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
3. Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
Valid Driver's License Required.
4. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of electrical systems, drywall, carpentry, metalwork, painting, seating, flooring, and general building maintenance.
- Ability to safely operate machinery, mechanical equipment, tools, lifts, ladders, and vehicles.
- Strong interpersonal and customer service skills, with the ability to work well with staff, contractors, artists, guests, and team members.
- Helpful, responsive attitude with the ability to develop practical solutions to maintenance needs and facility issues.
- Ability to work independently, use sound judgment, and keep supervisors informed of work activity, progress, and concerns.
- Ability to coordinate multiple projects while balancing urgent needs with routine maintenance priorities.
- Flexibility to work varied hours depending on operational needs, event schedules, emergencies, or required building system maintenance.
- Valid driver’s license is required and reliable transportation preferred.

6. Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
