POSITION: Adult Education Summer (Virtual) ESL Teacher
LOCATION: Starkweather Academy
DURATION: July 8, 2026 � Aug 14, 2026 (Tuesdays and Thursdays)
Staff hours: 9:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.
Student hours: 9:30 a.m. -11:30 a.m. and 11:45 a.m. - 1:45 p.m.
QUALIFICATIONS
1. Must possess a valid Michigan teaching certificate.
2. Experience working with adult students, preferred.
3. Possess knowledge of adult education curriculum
4. "Effective" rating on teacher evaluation.
5. Must be prepared to work the entire duration of the program.
6. Punctual and dependable.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Administers assessments.
2. Teaches classes by utilizing the provided curriculum in a virtual environment.
3. Differentiates instruction as needed.
4. Monitors students in a virtual environment.
5. Communicates weekly with students as to their progress.
RELEVANT UNDERSTANDINGS AND COMPETENCIES:
- Awareness of the physical, social, emotional and academic development of the learner.
- Capable of nurturing the home-school-community relationship.
- Proficient and knowledgeable in the core subject areas.
- Able to provide a flexible, stable and pleasant learning environment that is student-centered while maintaining appropriate classroom management.
- Familiarity with culturally relevant pedagogy and be able to include this pedagogy in his/her teaching practices.
- Understanding of pertinent learning intervention practices, such as Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS).
- Work collaboratively with colleagues in professional learning communities.
- Knowledge of and practical experience in research based instructional practices.
- Knowledge and practice with formative and summative assessments to evaluate and improve student achievement.
- Ability to implement school district curriculum with consistency.
- Work closely with school leaders to analyze student assessment data and use data to inform instruction. Collaborate in grade level teams to discuss student work,
share best practices, and ensure student mastery of standards.
- Form and maintain relationships with students' families. Participate in on-going professional development in the spirit of continuous improvement.
- Familiarity with CASAS, Burlington English, ESL Library, etc.

SALARY/ PAY RATE: $45.00 per hour

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand and talk or hear and sometimes walk and sit. Occasionally the employee will bend or twist at the neck more than the average person. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may occasionally push or lift up to 50 lbs such as boxes of books. The employee is directly responsible for safety, well-being, or work output of other people. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision such as to read handwritten or typed material, and the ability to adjust focus.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Upon recommendation for employment, Section 1230g, as amended, of the Revised School Code requires all school employees to be electronically fingerprinted for the purpose of undergoing a criminal history background check. The finger printing is conducted by a third party and is at the expense of the applicant. Cost for fingerprinting is approximately $70.00.
