Job Description

POSITION: ASD Special Education Teacher � 1.0 FTE

LOCATION: Act 18 Release Teacher (Madonna and Liberty Middle School)

Plymouth-Canton is seeking to employ culturally responsive educators who will be able to support and sustain equity-focused instruction for all learners. These educators create high achieving learning environments. They identify and systematically apply differentiated instruction and assessment that improves achievement for all learners from all racial groups.

QUALIFICATIONS:

1. A valid Michigan teaching certificate with Autism Spectrum Disorder (SV) special education endorsement preferred. 
2. The district will consider applicants with other special education certifications who are willing to obtain the Autism Spectrum Disorder endorsement. 
3. An endorsement to work with students who are autistic pursuant to Rules 340.1781, 340.1782, and 340.1799 of the Revised Administrative Rules for Special Education.
4. Knowledge and experience with students with autism at the secondary level is preferred.

RELEVANT UNDERSTANDINGS AND COMPETENCIES:

- Provides release time for Act 18 ASD teachers prep time.
- Utilizes age-appropriate art, music, gross motor, and/or literacy to provide cross curricular activities. 
- Plans adapted elective or special classes for students in the ASD center program.
- Implementation of instructional curriculum identified by the district to support students on a modified curriculum.
- Awareness of the physical, social, emotional and academic development of the learner.
- Skills in individualizing instruction.
- Able to provide a flexible, stable and pleasant learning environment that is student-centered while maintaining appropriate classroom management.
- Familiarity with culturally relevant pedagogy and be able to include this pedagogy in his/her teaching practices.
- Knowledge of positive behavioral supports and interventions.
- Effectively deliver instruction, maintains classroom environment, prepares and plans for needs of students and demonstrates professional responsibilities. 
- Maintains student records, attendance, performance and progress.
- Helps develop, implements and evaluates individualized behavior management plans and strategies.
- Works collaboratively with colleagues in professional learning communities.
- Knowledge of and practical experience in research based instructional practices.
- Collaborates in grade level teams to discuss student work, and share best practices. 
- Participates in on-going professional development in the spirit of continuous improvement.
- Provides supervision and oversight to classroom staff and students throughout the assigned workday.
- Performs other duties and assumes responsibilities as assigned by the supervisor.
- Follows the schedule outlined by the Special Education Supervisor.

EVALUATION: Performance of this position will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board's Policy on Evaluation of Certificated Personnel.

BEGINNING DATE:  August 31, 2026
New hires will be required to attend a three-day orientation
August 19-21, 2026

SALARY:  PCEA Teachers Salary Schedule

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand and talk or hear and sometimes walk and sit. Occasionally the employee will bend or twist at the neck more than the average person. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may occasionally push or lift up to 50 lbs such as boxes of books. The employee is directly responsible for safety, well-being, or work output of other people. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision such as to read handwritten or typed material, and the ability to adjust focus.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

Upon recommendation for employment, Section 1230g, as amended, of the Revised School Code requires all school employees to be electronically finger printed for the purpose of undergoing a criminal history background check. The fingerprinting is conducted by a third party and is at the expense of the applicant. Cost for fingerprinting is approximately $70.00.
