About Lihir

Our Lihir Operation, located on the beautiful island of Niolam, approximately 800km north of Papua New Guinea's capital, Port Moresby, is one of the world’s largest gold mines. Set within a geothermically active, extinct volcanic crater, Lihir operates an open-pit mine producing refractory ore, which undergoes pressure oxidation and conventional leaching to recover gold. Our workforce includes both residential and commute rosters, creating a diverse and dynamic team. Lihir offers a range of recreational facilities, including a gym, sports club, restaurant, bar, swimming pool, tennis and squash courts, and a 9-hole golf course. Your Impact


As part of the team, you will lead the delivery of mid- to long-term mine plans that align with production targets, strategic objectives, and regulatory requirements. You will play a critical role in optimising mine design, sequencing, and scheduling to maximise resource recovery and operational efficiency. Working closely with geology, engineering, and operations teams, you will ensure integrated and practical planning outcomes, monitor performance against plan, and implement improvements that enhance productivity, reduce costs, and support safe, reliable mining operations.

As part of the team, you will:

 

  • Supervise and coordinate mine planning activities to ensure alignment with operational goals
  • Develop and maintain mid- and long-term mine plans, schedules, and forecasts
  • Analyse production data, track performance, and address variances
  • Provide technical guidance and support to the mine planning team
  • Foster collaboration across geology, engineering, and operations functions
  • Identify and drive continuous improvement opportunities in planning processes
  • Manage risk by identifying, assessing, and implementing mitigation strategies
  • Lead and contribute to a positive, productive, and safety-focused team environment

Prerequisites for the Role

 

  • Degree in Mining Engineering
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in mining operations, preferably in open cut mining
  • Strong knowledge of mine design, scheduling, and forecasting
  • Experience with MinePlan, Deswik, and Modular Mining systems
  • Solid understanding of drill & blast and its impact on load and haul
  • Demonstrated capability in data analysis, performance monitoring, and reporting
  • Sound knowledge of PNG Mine Safety Act and mining safety systems
  • Strong leadership, communication, and stakeholder engagement skills
  • Ability to work effectively in a multinational and remote operating environment

Your work environment

 

This role is offered on a 21:21 days only Fly in, Fly out (FIFO) roster to Lihir Island, PNG.

Our FIFO employees stay in a secure and comfortable camp, in an en-suited and airconditioned room equipped with mini fridge, TV and Wi-Fi. A variety of healthy meal options are catered for at our mess; and the wet mess provides a relaxed social setting where employees can unwind with a game of pool or darts.
