About the Team and the Role

Scale & Enablement is a critical pillar within eBay Design, serving as the force multiplier for how design delivers impact across the company. As a member of the Design Leadership team, this role operates at the intersection of systems, tooling, and organizational capability—ensuring that design at eBay is not only high quality, but fast, scalable, and deeply integrated into how we build products.

This team brings together Customer Technology, UX Research Systems, Design Technology, and Design Systems into a unified platform strategy. Its mandate is to enable designers, researchers, and cross-functional partners to move with speed and clarity—turning design from a function into an organizational capability. Scale & Enablement defines how we build—creating the infrastructure, systems, and workflows that make great experiences possible at scale.

As Sr. Director, you will define and drive this vision—building the platforms, systems, and teams that unlock step-change improvements in velocity, consistency, and quality across eBay.

Responsibilities

You will translate platform strategy into durable systems and measurable impact across the organization:

Define and Drive Design at Scale

  • Establish a clear vision for how design operates at scale across eBay—spanning systems, tooling, data, and workflows

  • Build a cohesive strategy across Design Systems, Design Tech, Customer Technology, and Research Systems

  • Identify and unlock opportunities to dramatically increase speed, consistency, and quality of product experiences

Build Platforms, Not Projects

  • Lead the development of scalable design systems, shared services, and internal platforms that enable teams to move faster with confidence

  • Drive adoption of design systems and standards across product teams, ensuring coherence across the ecosystem

  • Invest in infrastructure that enables reuse, automation, and intelligent workflows (including AI-assisted design and research)

Accelerate Through Technology and Data

  • Advance the integration of design and engineering through modern tooling, pipelines, and shared frameworks

  • Establish systems that connect research insights, customer data, and design decisions into a continuous feedback loop

  • Champion the use of AI and emerging technologies to transform design and research workflows

Lead and Scale High-Impact Teams

  • Build and lead a multidisciplinary organization across Design Systems, Design Technology, and Research Systems

  • Attract, develop, and retain senior talent, creating a culture of ownership, craftsmanship, and operational excellence

  • Set a high bar for execution while enabling teams to operate autonomously and effectively

Drive Cross-Functional Alignment and Adoption

  • Partner closely with Product, Engineering, Data, and Marketing leadership to embed systems and practices into how teams build

  • Influence roadmaps and technical strategy to ensure design enablement is foundational, not additive

  • Align stakeholders around shared standards, metrics, and ways of working

What you will accomplish:

Success in this role is measured by organizational transformation and leverage. You will

  • Enable step-function improvements in speed to market and iteration velocity

  • Establish coherent, scalable systems that unify the eBay product experience

  • Increase adoption and impact of design systems and shared platforms across teams

  • Create a connected ecosystem of tools, data, and insights that informs better decisions

  • Elevate design from a discipline to an organizational capability embedded in how eBay builds

Requirements

  • Proven people leader with experience building, managing, and scaling high-performing, cross-functional teams

  • 15+ years of experience in product design, design systems, design technology, or related fields

  • 8+ years leading and scaling multidisciplinary teams, including senior leaders

  • Proven track record of building platforms, systems, or infrastructure that drive impact at scale

  • Deep experience with design systems, design tooling, and/or design engineering

  • Strong understanding of UX research operations and systems and how insights integrate into product development

  • Demonstrated ability to operate at executive level, influencing strategy, roadmaps, and investment decisions

  • Experience driving cross-functional alignment across Product, Engineering, and Data organizations

  • Strong systems thinking: ability to connect people, process, and technology into cohesive solutions

  • Experience leveraging AI and emerging technologies to improve workflows and outcomes

  • Exceptional communication and storytelling skills, with the ability to align large organizations
