Position Summary
Coastal Health is seeking a highly organized and patient-focused Referral Coordinator to join our centralized office team. This position plays a critical role in coordinating referrals for both our primary care and specialty care practices, ensuring timely access to care and seamless communication between providers, patients, and insurance companies.
The ideal candidate will possess strong administrative, communication, and problem-solving skills, along with experience navigating insurance requirements and healthcare referral processes.
Key Responsibilities
- Process and manage incoming and outgoing referrals for primary care and specialty care providers.
- Verify insurance eligibility, benefits, authorizations, and referral requirements.
- Obtain prior authorizations and referrals as required by insurance carriers.
- Coordinate appointments with specialists, diagnostic facilities, and ancillary service providers.
- Maintain accurate referral documentation within the electronic health record (EHR) system.
- Communicate referral status updates to patients, providers, and clinical staff.
- Follow up on pending referrals and authorizations to ensure timely completion.
- Monitor referral work queues and address outstanding items promptly.
- Ensure compliance with payer guidelines, regulatory requirements, and organizational policies.
- Assist with reporting and tracking referral metrics to support operational efficiency.
- Collaborate with providers, clinical teams, and administrative staff to improve referral workflows.
Qualifications
Required
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Minimum of 2 years of medical office, referral coordination, or healthcare administrative experience.
- Knowledge of insurance plans, referrals, and prior authorization processes.
- Experience working with electronic health records (EHR) systems.
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Excellent verbal and written communication abilities.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
Preferred
- Experience in a multi-specialty medical practice.
- Familiarity with Medicare, Medicaid, and commercial insurance plans.
- Medical terminology knowledge.
- Certified Medical Administrative Assistant (CMAA) or similar certification.
