FLSA Status: Non-Exempt/Hourly

Pay: $25.41/hr. ($20.32/hr. base rate + $5.09 H&W)

*Pay rates listed reflect the full rate for this position, including both the base pay and health and welfare benefits in accordance with applicable requirements. Pay is based on numerous factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.

POSITION SUMMARY INFORMATION: DUTIES AND REQUIREMENTS


Position Overview: In this role, you will support detention facility mail operations by processing, sorting, inspecting, and distributing incoming and outgoing mail for residents, facility personnel, and operational departments in accordance with government detention standards and facility security procedures. You will help ensure mail services are completed accurately, securely, and efficiently while maintaining accountability of correspondence and monitoring for contraband or prohibited materials. This position requires attention to detail, organizational skills, professionalism, confidentiality, and the ability to work within a secure detention environment while following established mail handling and security protocols.


Responsibilities:

  • Receive, sort, inspect, process, and distribute incoming and outgoing mail, packages, and operational correspondence for resident and facility personnel.
  • Screen mail and packages for contraband, prohibited materials, security threats, or unauthorized items in accordance with facility procedures and security protocols.
  • Maintain accurate mail logs, tracking records, chain-of-custody documentation, and operational reports related to mailroom activities.
  • Coordinate resident mail distribution schedules and ensure correspondence is delivered accurately and within required operational timelines.
  • Operate mailroom equipment including scanners, postage systems, shredders, and package processing tools safely and efficiently.
  • Maintain organized storage and accountability of incoming packages, legal mail, certified mail, and operational correspondence.
  • Coordinate with detention personnel, security staff, legal representatives, and outside carriers regarding mail processing activities and operational concerns.
  • Report suspicious items, damaged packages, security concerns, or policy violations immediately through the appropriate chain of command.
  • Maintain confidentiality and proper handling of sensitive correspondence, legal documents, resident records, and operational communications.
  • Ensure all mailroom operations comply with government detention standards, facility policies, postal regulations, and operational security procedures.
  • Support audits, inspections, compliance reviews, and operational assessments related to mailroom operations and resident correspondence services.
  • Maintain professionalism, strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and effective communication while supporting secure and efficient detention facility mail operations.


Qualifications:

  • Must possess a minimum of one (1) year of mailroom administrative experience.
  • Must be able to provide proof of citizenship or legal US work authorization.
  • If prior active-duty military, must provide copies of DD214(s) showing discharge condition.
  • Must consent to fingerprinting.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Must possess a high school diploma or equivalent
  • Clean criminal record and ability to pass a comprehensive background check and security screening.
  • Ability to pass a preemployment medical assessment and drug screening.
  • Excellent communication, observation, and report-writing skills.
  • Ability to remain calm and effective under pressure and in high-stress situations.
  • Ability to work flexible shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays.


Work Environment:

Employees may be exposed to extreme cold or hot weather conditions, fumes, or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and loud noise.


Physical Requirements:

Employees may be required to remain in a stationary position, stand, push, pull, climb, kneel, crawl, balance, squat, bend, and reach. Employees may be also required to use gear to move items around, including, but not limited to, carts and dollies. Employees may also be occasionally required to lift and/or move up to 49 pounds.
