Job Summary:

The Executive Medical Director of Perioperative Services has the responsibility to lead, in a dyad relationship with the Vice President of Perioperative Services, the day-to-day operations and strategic direction of the Department of Perioperative Services as well as oversee the daily workflow of Physicians, providers and perioperative staff. In this role, the Executive Medical Director of Perioperative Services will help direct the perioperative areas to function as part of a High Reliability Organization. As a key member of the health system administrative team, this position works with other members of the administrative team and medical staff on strategic planning, capital and operational budgets, development of new projects and services, and the day-to-day operations of the Health System’s perioperative areas. The time commitment for this position consists of a minimum of sixteen (16) hours per week.

Job Description:

Physician / Clinical Leadership: 

  • Will have responsibility to oversee physicians and surgeons involved in the operations of perioperative areas as well as co-management agreements involving surgical specialties.
  • The Executive Medical Director of Perioperative Services will work in a dyad relationship with the VP of Perioperative Services to assure the proper clinical working of the department as well as the development and enforcement of clinical policies and procedures.
  • Will work with dyad partner and the Department Chief of Surgery in helping lead and direct the Perioperative Services Executive Committee (PSEC)
  • Maintain ongoing communication with Department of Surgery Chief to ensure awareness of issues, projects, and initiatives impacting physicians and advanced practice providers in surgical specialties.

Medical Staff Office:

  • Works with the Department of Surgery Chief, Chief Medical Officer (CMO) / Vice President of Medical Services (VPMS), and Director of Medical Staff Services on matters pertaining to members of the Medical/Dental staff who utilize perioperative services.
  • Partners (as needed) with the Department of Surgery Chief on matters pertaining to risk management and compliance in the perioperative areas.
  • Collaborates with the Department of Surgery Chief in addressing disruptive physician / APP issues.

Quality Management:

  • Works closely with key stakeholders to assist in programs to improve clinical quality and patient safety outcomes involving perioperative areas.      
  • Will work with the perioperative leadership team, physicians / APPs, and the Quality team to enhance the patient experience in the perioperative areas.

Accreditation: 

  • Work closely with key stakeholders key stakeholders to assist with accreditation activities involving perioperative areas.

Physician Relations: 

  • Perform physician relations activities involving perioperative areas including development of continuing medical education in this area.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

   

Education, Credentials, Licenses:

  • Graduate of an accredited medical school, board certified /admissible in their specialty.
  • Minimum of five (5) years’ experience in the practice of surgery or peri-operative medicine.
  • He/she must meet appointment qualifications of the St. Elizabeth Medical/Dental Staff and have an employment relationship with St Elizabeth Physicians or St Elizabeth Healthcare.

Specialized Knowledge: 

  • Demonstrated skills and experience in clinical, educational and administrative Leadership.
  • Ability to analyze data and develop recommendations/actions based upon the results.
  • Experience in driving change in an organization.

Kind and Length of Experience: 

  • Proven success in Quality, Patient Safety, Risk Management, and Infection Control improvement activities related to perioperative areas.
  • History of successfully engaging Medical Staff to improve outcomes.
  • Successfully built productive working relationships with Nursing and other hospital departments as well as other Medical Staff departments.
  • Past experience in Medical Staff leadership.
