About the role
The Manager – Patents Information Scientist is responsible for delivering high‑quality, business‑critical patent search, analytics, and competitive intelligence to support Haleon’s global IP, R&D, and innovation teams. The role provides expert‑level prior‑art analysis, risk assessments, landscape insights, and data‑driven recommendations that directly influence patentability, freedom‑to‑operate, product development, and strategic decision‑making. The role ensures methodological rigor, advanced tool usage, strong scientific reasoning, and reliable interpretation of complex scientific/technical disclosures.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and execute patent search and analytics assignments, including:
Patentability/novelty searches
Freedom to Operate (FTO) analyses
Invalidity/validity assessments
Biosequence and structure activity searches
State of the art/landscape mapping
Competitive and technology intelligence
- Deliver authoritative insights and recommend risk mitigation pathways to IP Counsel, R&D leadership, and business stakeholders.
- Independently scope search strategies, craft sophisticated query frameworks, and validate multi-jurisdictional data across patent and non-patent literature.
- Apply deep expertise in scientific analysis (chemistry, biochemistry, life sciences or related domain) to interpret technical disclosures and identify material prior art.
- Provide quality review and methodological coaching to junior team members on a dotted line basis (without direct line management).
- Ensure all deliverables meet Haleon standards for accuracy, reproducibility, justification logic, and audit readiness.
- Maintain strong working knowledge of patent office practices, evolving search methodologies, and global database capabilities.
- Engage closely with R&D, IP Legal, external counsel, and business teams to align assignments with strategic priorities and development timelines.
- Develop reusable search templates, taxonomies, and competitive intelligence frameworks to improve speed, consistency, and analytics depth.
- Contribute to continuous improvement of workflows, automation opportunities, and knowledge management practices within IP Operations.
Why you?
Basic Qualification:
- Advanced degree (Master’s or higher) in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Biotechnology, or a related scientific discipline.
- Registered Patent Agent (India/US/EU) is advantageous but not mandatory.
- 6-10 years of hands-on experience in patent search, prior‑art analytics, and technology intelligence within an in‑house legal team, IP service provider, or law firm.
- Demonstrated expertise in high‑complexity search assignments requiring independent judgment, multi‑database triangulation, and strong scientific interpretation.
- Experience supporting consumer‑health, pharma, life‑sciences, or adjacent scientific domains preferred
Preferred Qualification:
Technical Skills
- Proficiency with trademark docketing systems (e.g., ANAQUA) for entering, tracking, and maintaining portfolio data
- Strong understanding of trademark prosecution steps, renewal cycles, recordal requirements, and standard documentation.
- Ability to generate and interpret reports on IP portfolio status and deadlines.
Soft Skills
- Strong communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to explain issues clearly and drive timely actions.
- Ability to work independently, manage priorities effectively, and handle multiple deadlines in a structured manner.
- Practical, solution-oriented mindset with good judgment on when to act and when to escalate.
- Comfortable working with global, cross-functional teams and external counsel on day-to-day matters.
- High attention to detail, strong sense of ownership, and commitment to accuracy and confidentiality.
