EHS Chemist

Job Purpose:

To support the Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) programs at the site, ensuring compliance with regulations and promoting safe, efficient, and environmentally responsible operations. With a particular focus on analytical chemistry and waste management.

Shift pattern – 7am to 7pm 4 days on 4 days off to cover a 12/7 coverage for the team.

Key Responsibilities:

Incident investigation and analysis

  • Conduct accident investigations on reported incidents, near misses and observations
  • Conduct analysis and assign corrective and preventative actions
  • Carry out trend analysis to prevent future incidents

Environmental Monitoring and Sampling:

  • Conduct velocity testing to assess air movement in controlled environments.
  • Perform swab sampling and stack VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds) monitoring for compliance and environmental health.
  • Maintain and monitor fume cabinets to ensure safe containment and operation.

Analytical chemistry

  • Carry out sample preparation and analysis.
  • Key instruments ICP-MS, GC and IC
  • Analysis results and provide reports internally and to regulatory bodies

Waste Management:

  • Oversee the bulking of hazardous waste (excluding collection preparation/coordination).
  • Analyse and characterize waste, liaising with waste vendors to ensure proper disposal.
  • Prepare hazardous waste for collection and maintain accurate logs and invoices for all site waste.

Compliance and Documentation:

  • Maintain COSHH (Control of Substances Hazardous to Health) and risk assessments.
  • Update and manage procedure documents to align with regulatory standards and site requirements.

Incident Response and Analysis:

  • Respond to calls for investigating spills, performing pH testing, and emergency phosphorus checks.
  • Conduct weekend analyses and provide rapid response to unplanned events to minimize risks.

Continuous Improvement:

  • Contribute to the development and implementation of strategies for EHS program enhancement.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to drive safety and sustainability initiatives.

Expansion support

  • Provide input to the planning of the expansion of chemical operations across the site while maintaining operations and site safety standards

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Chemistry degree or higher, analytical chemistry experience desirable. Key instruments ICP-MS and GC
  • Strong experience in EHS operations within a chemical plant or similar industrial environment.
  • Expertise in hazardous waste management and environmental monitoring techniques.
  • Knowledge of COSHH, risk assessments, and regulatory compliance.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to respond effectively to emergencies.
  • Detail-oriented with strong documentation and organizational abilities.
