Job Description

A per diem nurse provides comprehensive primary and preventative care, including patient's assessment, administering treatments, medications, educating patients, managing chronic and acute conditions. Per diem nurse coordinate care with providers, manage patient flow, perform triage, and document health records, acting as a crucial link between patients and medical staff in a fast - paced environment. Positions are "as needed", often to fill out gaps for absent staff or high patient census with flexible scheduling often involving off hours and weekends without being offered regular scheduled hours.

A Pediatric Nurse providers comprehensive primary care to children and adolescent (birth through young adulthood), focusing on wellness, acute illness, illness management, and preventative health. They perform screenings, administer immunizations, educate families, and coordinate care in a diverse, underserved setting.

Key Responsibilities

  • Clinical Assessments: Perform physical exams, monitor vital signs, and track developmental milestones from infancy through age 18.
  • Preventive Care: Administer routine vaccinations, conduct screenings (vision, hearing, lead), and provide nutritional counseling.
  • Triage: Assess the severity of illness or injury for walk-in or telephonic patients to determine if they need urgent care or can be managed in the clinic.
  • Care Collaboration: Act as a bridge between the health center, schools, and social services to ensure children with chronic conditions or special needs receive holistic support. Work within a multidisciplinary team (physicians, social workers, nutritionists) to provide holistic, culturally competent care.
  • Family Education: Teach parents about managing chronic illnesses like asthma or diabetes and guide them on safety and healthy lifestyle choices. Counsel parents/guardians on child development, safety, nutrition, and home care techniques
  • Documentation: Maintain accurate electronic health records in ECW and ensure all care meets HIPAA and federal regulatory standards.
  • Primary Care: Perform physical exams, well-child visits, developmental screenings, and developmental milestones tracking.
  • Acute/Chronic Care: Diagnose and treat common childhood illnesses (e.g., ear infections, rashes) and manage chronic conditions like asthma, etc
  • Preventative Care: Administer immunizations, perform screenings (vision/hearing), and provide nutritional counseling.
  • Education: Registered Nurse (RN) 
  • Licensure: Active CT RN license.
  • Experience: Previous pediatric, community health, or ambulatory care experience is preferred.
  • Certification: CPR/BLS Certification. 
  • Cultural competence for treating diverse, vulnerable populations.
  • Bilingual skills (Spanish preferred)
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and handle walk-in/urgent care cases.
