CAMPUS MINISTER /Theology Teacher
PAYROLL GRADE: 13 FLSA STATUS: EXEMPT
The position of Campus Minister / Theology Teacher is vital to the nature of a Catholic High School. Foremost, the role encompasses focusing on the spiritual well-being of all students, faculty and staff. The Campus Minister / Theology Teacher works to make Christ and His Church the focal point of a Catholic High School. The position also encompasses, at the discretion of the administration, the teacher of religion or other subject area in which the incumbent is qualified to teach.
- Spiritual Life
- Aids and supports all faculty and staff members in their responsibility to reach the Catholic Faith. This person ensures that the school's Catholic identity remains foremost in the daily lives of faculty and staff.
- Ensures that students foster a positive attitude of the Catholic Faith; such attitude is outwardly shown by them.
- Provides for occasions throughout the school year when students are exposed to clergy and religious who are not on the school staff to strengthen the notion of the value of religious vocations.
- Serves as the principal contact with the school community for vocation directors.
- Is available to students
- This person establishes an appropriate professional rapport with students.
- Guides students fully in keeping with the teachings of the Catholic Church.
- Actively works to foster and strengthen an active, daily prayer life within the school community. Such prayer life is outwardly shown by students, faculty and staff.
- Acts as a resource for religious-related questions/projects among faculty, students and staff.
- Planning Management
- Sets long and short-term goals for enhancing the school's Catholic identity and implements these goals, in consultation with the Principal.
- Works closely with members of the administration in herein-defined tasks, continuously keeping them informed of ongoing work and seeking their continuous approval and support of such work.
- Completes tasks in an efficient and timely manner. Demonstrates efficiency in completing projects assigned by the Principal.
- Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of the mission of the Catholic High School and communicates this mission to the community.
- Adheres to all of the policies and procedures of the Diocese of Harrisburg and the High School.
- Coordinates the purchase of liturgical and retreat supplies.
- Stays within the school's budgeted limits for the retreat and liturgical programs.
- Follow the instructions of the school's administration.
- Displays a team spirit in working with faculty and staff.
- Seeks appropriate opportunities for professional growth.
- Liturgical
- Ensures that Mass is celebrated on all Holy Days of Obligation, Ash Wednesday, Holy Thursday and other important feasts throughout the school year when school is in session.
- Plans and coordinates all liturgical events in consultation with the Principals and Pastors of Deanery parishes.
- Ensures that the calendar for all liturgical events is in place at the start of the school year.
- Ensures that all Masses and other liturgical services are prayerful, spiritually uplifting and strengthen the Faith of students.
- Adheres to all laws and norms regarding the celebration of the Mass, sacraments and liturgical practices of the Church.
- Ensures that all appropriate plans and coordination are in place for all liturgical services, including celebrant, hymns, physical set-up of worship space and the like.
- Fosters an atmosphere within the school community � students, faculty and staff � which recognizes the value and sacredness of the Mass and sacraments.
- Demonstrates a welcoming spirit to all non-Catholic students and faculty without diminishing the school's Catholic identity.
- Retreats
- Plans and coordinates all school-sponsored retreats for students.
- Plans and coordinates all school-sponsored retreats/in-service days for faculty and staff.
- Ensures that all retreats are prayerful, spiritually uplifting and strengthen the Faith of students.
- Ensures that all of those who are called to conduct any part of a retreat are persons of impeccable character.
- Ensures that all presentations and activities conducted within all retreats are strictly in keeping with the teachings of the Catholic Church.
- Provides notice of retreat opportunities in the region that are sponsored by other Church-approved Catholic organizations.
- Coordination Among School and Community
- Develops and implements programs for educating and improving parental involvement of Faith formation of their own lives and in the lives of their children.
- Develops and implements programs for educating and improving the Faith life of faculty and staff.
- Coordinates an active, structured relationship with the school's guidance department (including e.g. peer support and counseling programs) to foster faith formation.
- Encourages students to display a healthy attitude regarding service to the Church and community at large and to be actively involved in their parish.
- Works closely with the pastors of the parishes within the Deanery and beyond to keep them actively involved in the life of the school community.
- Communicates the vision and purpose of Catholic faith formation and education to the general public, working closely with the members of the administration as well as the development director.
- Faculty Member
- Creates an effective learning environment through functional and attractive displays, bulletin boards, and activity/learning centers.
- Observe and evaluate students' performance, behavior, social development, and physical health.
- Prepare materials and classrooms for class activities.
- Adapt teaching methods and instructional materials to meet students' varying needs and interests.
- Plan and conduct activities for a balanced program of instruction, demonstration, and work time that provides students with opportunities to observe, question, and investigate.
- Instruct students individually and in groups, using various teaching methods such as lectures, discussions, and demonstrations.
- Establish clear objectives for all lessons, units, and projects, and communicate those objectives to students.
- Assign and grade class work and homework.
- Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior needed to provide an orderly, productive classroom environment
- Prepare, administer, and grade tests and assignments in order to evaluate students' progress.
- Communicates with parents and school counselors on student progress
- Maintain accurate and complete student records as required by laws, diocesan policies, and administrative regulations.
- Guide and counsel students with adjustment and/or academic problems, or special academic interests.
- Prepare objectives and outlines for courses of study, following curriculum guidelines or requirements of the school, state, and diocese.
- Enforce administration policies and rules governing students.
- Identifies students needs and cooperates with other professional staff members in assessing and helping students solve learning and health problems
- Use technology and other equipment and materials to supplement presentations.
- Prepare for assigned classes, and show written evidence of preparation upon request of immediate supervisors.
- Collaborate with other teachers and administrators in the development, evaluation, and revision of secondary school programs.
- Prepare reports on students and activities as required by administration.
- Instruct and monitor students in the use and care of equipment and materials, in order to prevent injuries and damage.
- Maintain professional competence by attending professional meetings, educational conferences, and teacher training workshops in order to maintain and improve professional competence for Act 48
- Plan and supervise class projects, field trips, visits by guest speakers or other experiential activities, and guide students in learning from those activities.
- Attend staff meetings, and serve on committees as required.
- Administer standardized ability and achievement tests, and interpret results to determine student strengths and areas of need.
- Perform administrative duties such as assisting in school libraries, hall and cafeteria monitoring, and bus loading and unloading.
- Select, store, order, issue, and inventory classroom equipment, materials, and supplies.
- Sponsor extracurricular activities such as clubs, student organizations, and academic contests.
- Prepare and supervise students for Mass.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Must possess a Bachelor's degree or higher in religious education, theology, Catholic studies, or a related field.
- Must possess the ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
- Must possess the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, parents, and the community.
- Must comply with PA State clearance requirements.
- Must be a Catholic in good standing.
